You are very very privileged.
I am not just talking about you, but everyone who can read this blog which is written in English.
I always thought English was another medium of expression but never realised this to be a big privilege till I happened to watch a gripping real story titled “12th fail”
The movie is about the masses who come from a poor background and Hindi medium school. It is about their struggle to make it to the mainstream.
The top echelons of both government and corporate world are still dominated by the English speaking population.
The story is about Manoj who aspires to become an IPS officer.
He works 12 – 14 hours in an atta chakki, studies for 6 hours and sleeps for whatever time is left.
He does not make it in his first 3 attempts and then puts in his best effort for the 4th and final attempt (UPSC exam).
He clears the prelims and then the mains. He faces an elitist English speaking panel in his interview and does not fare well.
Manoj was not expecting to make it and goes half heartedly to the centre to check his result.
He had made it against all odds.
Tears trickle down his face (ख़ुशी के आंसू).
I just couldn’t hold myself back.
I cried.
I cried to celebrate that moment with Manoj.
I cried to acknowledge the privileges I have enjoyed over the years.
All the challenges which I have faced in my life seemed too small as compared to what Manoj went through.
If Manoj could finally fulfil his dream, just think of what you and me can accomplish.
We are very very privileged.
