Teenagers can be really demanding, more so in case of their birthday!

My daughter had something specific in mind for the cake – a small design at the topmost layer of a round shaped cake.

It wasn’t anything flashy. In fact it seemed pretty simple to the engineer in me.

We went to a market which has tens of bakeries – from the known biggies to the relatively smaller ones.

We looked at the ready made cakes, just in case she would be willing to pick up something right away.

The pricing really put me off..

The best Kaju Katli in the market is available at Rs 1,000/ kg

While a simple vanilla cream cake starts at Rs 1,000/ kg

And a good chocolate cake is at about double the price!

I still couldn’t complain (I hope you can make out the agony of a corporate motivational speaker in me!)

Anyways, let’s get back to the story.

We visited 6 bakeries and she didn’t like any of the ready designs or anything from their catalogue. She had a picture of what she wanted and 5 bakeries refused (most good bakeries are mass production factories).

One of the known bakeries agreed but with a caveat of having to order a 2 kg cake. This was going to be too big for our requirement.

We then visited one last bakery in the market.

We were greeted with a warm smile by Vikas Kumar (my namesake!). We showed the picture to him and he agreed to deliver our requirement the following day.

We went over the next day to Sonya Bakery.

The cake looked simply gorgeous – just about what my daughter wanted. And Vikas Kumar was right there, beaming with a soft smile as he handed over the cake to us.

It’s not about being the best at what you do but being able to meet the customer’s expectations!

Sonya Bakery found a customer in us for life 🙂
