A good friend called up last week and informed me that he’s sharing my number with a friend.
The lady wants you to coach her son as he’s passing through a rough patch.
I told my friend I am not into personalised coaching. My friend insisted and I agreed to make one pro bono call.
I called up. The lady was a senior teacher with one of the top schools in Gurgaon.
She told me that her son is 29 years old, a bright engineering graduate, an entrepreneur since a few years but making the same money as a fresher would do at 22 years.
Mam, what can I do for your son?
Vikas, there’s a lot of societal pressure. It’s the right age to be married but no girl would want to marry a man who earns less than what she would be earning.
My son wants to continue with his business but I want you to convince him to join a high paying corporate job, get married and lead a happy life.
I had a good 15 min discussion with the lady. I wanted to set it right on who actually required the coaching session!
I discussed the entire episode with my wife the very same night.
She had a good laugh but reiterated her father agreed to her marrying an IIM graduate who was earning a decent salary at that time. He may have been doubtful if the proposal came from an entrepreneur.
OMG! Incidentally I got married in mid 2000s at the age of 29 when I was in a job.
My request to all mothers and fathers (आदरणीय माँ और पिताजी) – the next generation is smarter than us, please give them a chance.
Let them flap their wings.
Let them explore some new horizons.
Let them create the Naya Hindustan, the New India.
