I love to listen to passionate people and I was in for a treat a few weeks back.
I attended a business conference and a musical night was scheduled later towards the evening.
Papon was to perform LIVE (you may want to Google his name if you do not listen to Hindi film music).
He shared about his life before the program began. His story is a case study in persistence.
Originally from Assam, he came to Delhi for his graduation and then settled at Noida.
He sold laptops and printers at Nehru Place in Delhi for a long time before he finally decided to go full time into singing. He thus moved to Mumbai.
There was a problem as his voice was very different. As a playback singer, your voice ought to be in sync with the leading stars – that’s how you get an opportunity to be the playback singer.
He didn’t get any work for 3 years.
He persisted and finally got his first filmi break at the age of 31.
He spoke about hope, his passion for music and willingness to do whatever it takes!
And then he finally took the stage.
ये मोह मोह के धागे
तेरी उँगलियों से जो उलझे
है रोम रोम एकतारा
जो बादलों में से गुज़रे
His body rhythm changed.
I could see him grooving to the number.
He was in the Zone.
The intensity of his voice increased as the audience started to respond.
I know what it means to perform on the stage.
Its so very contagious – the artist gets into his groove which charges up the audience which in turn provides more energy to the artist!
I came back with an important lesson. There is nothing called overnight success. It’s about staying authenticity and persistence.
एक दिन सफलता आपके कदम चूमेगी
