There are some things money can’t buy..

Do you this remember this punchline of late 90s?

I recalled the old Mastercard advertisement as I sat through the sessions of the SHRM conclave at Taj Palace a few days back.

Mastercard unveiled a series of ads depicting emotions of joy when people met after a long time.

The tag line was –
“There are some things money can’t buy,
For everything else there’s Mastercard”

It basically stated that all financial aspects could be left to Mastercard with the humans focussing on the emotional aspects.

Fast forward 2 decades and I came across a similar theme. The entire talk at SHRM was entered around AI.

I heard an interesting anecdote:
AI will not result in job loss but a person using AI will most certainly replace a person who’s not using it.

This ain’t happening the first time.

There were people employed for handwritten manuscripts before a person using typewriter replaced them.

There were people employed for book keeping before a person using computer replaced them.

The list is endless.

The HR head of a large company spoke about preparing his strategy presentations in about 2 – 3 hours using the latest AI tools all by himself.

A year back, he together with his team had taken 5 days to complete the same.

Scary?
Are we really staring at a scenario of large scale lay offs?

I don’t know.

No-one can accurately predict the future except for one thing.

A human will always need a fellow human to talk, to interact and to share his/ her emotions.

This is something which may not get replaced by AI in the foreseeable future.

The next gen leader needs to know that it’s the softer aspects which are going to be the differentiator.

For everything else, there’s AI 🙂
